Choose IELTS help by one thing first: who scores your Writing and Speaking, how often and against which criteria. You can mark Listening and Reading with a key. Writing and Speaking need an independent score, because it is hard to see your own gaps. Whatever you choose, compare the price per marked task, ask the 9 questions below and walk away from a guaranteed band without written terms. Our recommendation is GoPrep, our own platform, for that feedback and a daily plan, on its own or with a tutor for live Speaking.

Course, tutor, platform or self-study

Online coaching, a teacher by video, belongs in the teacher table. Compare every option on what moves your score, not on how popular it is.

Why feedback comes first: we looked at 727 first full mock exams on GoPrep taken between 28 July and 26 September 2026 in which all four skills scored 4.0 or higher. The weakest skill was Writing in 43% of them, Listening in 42%, Reading in 36% and Speaking in 15% (ties count for each; Writing and Speaking AI-estimated). That shows which skills are often weakest, not which help you need, so check your own mock. A key shows which Listening answers were wrong, and a transcript shows why. A Writing score needs someone to read your work against the criteria.

What an IELTS course costs, and what drives the price

Course and tutor prices aren't published in one place and they change, so here is what moves them:

  • hours and weeks (ask whether an hour is 45 or 60 minutes);
  • group size, or one-to-one;
  • online or in person;
  • what is included: marked Writing tasks, Speaking practice, mock tests, the exam fee;
  • the teacher's experience and training.

One sourced example from Kazakhstan: International House (Interpress) lists 280,000 ₸ for a 72-academic-hour online IELTS course for a group of 10, or 370,000 ₸ with the official test included (checked 29 September 2026). Bought separately, their page shows 280,000 + 110,250 = 390,250 ₸. Local formats and prices: IELTS courses in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Then compare offers on two separate numbers:

  • full price ÷ guaranteed marked Writing tasks;
  • full price ÷ minutes of your own Speaking practice with feedback (your speaking time, not the length of a group lesson).

They show how much feedback a package holds, not the price of each service, so read them with the rest of the offer.

What comes free with your test booking

In Kazakhstan, a British Council booking includes access to IELTS Ready Premium (British Council Kazakhstan). IDP gives free access to a Macquarie University online course when you book with IDP at participating centres: 4 days for all four skills or 30 days for one (IDP offer). To see IDP dates, use the IDP Kazakhstan test search.

The IDP booking link is a partner link: GoPrep may earn a commission, and the price for you stays the same.

9 questions to ask before you pay

Ask these before paying a course, a tutor or a platform. A good provider answers plainly and in writing.

  1. Who scores my Writing and Speaking, how often, and against which criteria? A good answer names the criteria (Writing: Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy; Speaking: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, Pronunciation), a number of tasks a week and when marked work comes back.
  2. How many full, timed mock tests are included? On computer, if that is how you will take the test.
  3. Where do the materials come from? Official tests and published IELTS books, or the school's own tasks.
  4. Is there a placement test, and how big are the groups? In a mixed-level group the pace may be too fast or too slow for you.
  5. Is it for Academic or General Training? Writing Task 1 is different in the two tests (Academic vs General Training).
  6. How were the results you advertise counted? Official results or mocks, out of how many students, starting from which band.
  7. What is the full price? Materials, mock tests, the exam fee, and what happens if you miss lessons or want to stop: refund, transfer or freeze.
  8. Can I try first, and will you re-check a rewrite? One marked Writing task shows the feedback better than a brochure.
  9. Does it fit before my test date? Leave a week for final mocks if you can. How long each gap takes: IELTS study plan.

Weak and useful feedback: one example

Use a trial check to see what you would pay for. Here is a Task 2 introduction we wrote for this example:

"Nowadays many people thinks that technology make our life more easier. In my opinion it have more advantages than disadvantages."

Weak feedback: "5.5. Improve your grammar." A band for two sentences is a guess. Useful feedback names the error, the criterion and the fix:

ErrorCriterionFix
people thinks, technology make, it haveGrammatical Range and Accuracy: the verb doesn't agree with its subjectpeople think, technology makes, it has
more easierGrammatical Range and Accuracy: double comparativeeasier
The opinionTask Response can't be assessed from this introduction alone: it needs the task prompt and the complete essayJudge it on the full essay

Then it sets a retry task: first rewrite the introduction, then write one body paragraph with your main reason and an example.

How GoPrep answers the scoring questions

GoPrep, our own platform, answers the scoring questions above like this:

  • Question 1, who scores Writing and Speaking: AI, against the official IELTS criteria. Writing on each of the four criteria in half-band steps, Speaking with a transcript plus fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
  • Question 2, full timed mocks: 80+ full mock tests per skill in the computer format.
  • Question 6, how results are counted: the progress figure below names the sample and the period, and says these are AI-scored mocks, not official results. On average, GoPrep scores 0.6 band stricter than the real IELTS (2,723 learners who reported their official result), so you arrive at the exam with a margin.
  • Question 9, fitting your test date: an adaptive daily plan runs to your date, built around the skill you name as weakest.

Web and iPhone app, Russian and Uzbek interface. GoPrep won EdTech Project of the Year at the AI & Digital Bridge Awards 2026 in Astana and has 40,000+ users in 140 countries.

GoPrep's Score Guarantee: if your overall IELTS band doesn't rise by at least 1.0, you get 100% of your subscription back, provided you meet the conditions (an official TRF of 6.5 or lower, at least 3 months of subscription, and the full practice plan).

Red flags

Think twice if you see any of these:

  • on a full IELTS course, no marking of Writing and Speaking, or "feedback" that is a band with no criterion named (a Listening-only course is a different case);
  • results without a method: no number of students, no starting band, or mock scores shown as official results;
  • no trial, or a discount that only lasts if you pay today;
  • one level for everyone: no placement test, mixed groups;
  • a course that doesn't fit before your test date or doesn't match your module.

Your test is in 9 weeks. You need 6.5 in every skill, and your mock shows Writing 5.5, the rest 6.5 or higher. Two offers with illustrative prices, made up for this exercise. Work out the empty rows, then scroll for our reading.

Our verdict

On what moves your score (Writing and Speaking scored against the IELTS criteria, full timed mocks and a plan to your test date), our recommendation is GoPrep: on its own if you can keep a routine, or with a tutor for live Speaking. Pick a group course if fixed days matter most. Its full mocks and Writing and Speaking scoring come with a GoPrep subscription.

4 questions

1Which question tells you most about a course's Writing feedback before you pay?

A teacher's own band says little about how your work will be marked. Frequency, the marker and the criteria matter more.

2A course promises "band 7 guaranteed". What should you ask first?

No one can guarantee a band. The written terms decide whether the promise means anything: money back, a free repeat or nothing.

3A school says "our students average 7.0". What makes that claim useful?

Without the sample and the starting point, an average says nothing about what the course adds.

4Your test is in 6 weeks. A 3-month course starts next week. What is the problem?

The full course doesn't fit in the weeks you have. Ask whether you can cover the parts you need before the test, or choose a shorter programme. A week for final mocks helps if your dates allow.

FAQ

Do I need a course to prepare for IELTS?

Not always. You can mark Listening and Reading with a key, and explanations or transcripts show why answers were wrong. Writing and Speaking need an independent score against the IELTS criteria, from a teacher, a tutor or a scoring tool such as GoPrep (ours), because your own gaps are hard to see. A course is one way to get it, plus fixed days if you need structure.

Is online IELTS coaching as good as classes in person?

The test is the same, so compare the same things: who marks your Writing and Speaking and how often, group size, full mocks and the schedule. Online saves travel; in person may suit you if you need a fixed place to study.

How much does an IELTS course cost?

It depends on hours, group size, online or in person, and what is included: marked Writing tasks, Speaking practice, mock tests, the exam fee. Compare the price per guaranteed marked Writing task and per minute of your own Speaking practice, and ask for the full price in writing.

Can a course guarantee my IELTS band?

No. Only test day sets your band. If a course offers a guarantee, ask what happens if you don't reach it and get the terms in writing.
