A good IELTS score is the score your goal requires. IELTS Academic and General Training have no pass or fail: you get a band from 0 to 9 for each skill and overall, and each university, visa office or regulator decides what it accepts. So 6.5 can be an excellent result for one person and not enough for another.
If you want a benchmark, here are three facts from official sources:
- IELTS itself calls band 7 "Good" and band 6 "Competent".
- In 2024-2025, IELTS Academic test takers from Kazakhstan averaged 6.25 overall, and those from Uzbekistan 6.07 (IELTS test statistics).
- The undergraduate courses we checked ask for 6.0 to 6.5 overall. Some visas ask for 7 or more in every skill.
And one finding from our own data: a good overall is not enough when there is a minimum for each skill. Of 1,054 first full mock exams on GoPrep, 279 reached 6.5 overall, but 121 of them (43%) had at least one skill below 6.0, so they would still miss a "6.5 with no band below 6.0" requirement (28 July to 26 September 2026; Writing and Speaking scored by the GoPrep AI examiner).
Below you'll find the averages by country, what each goal asks for (every rule linked and checked 29 September 2026), where learners usually start, and a quick practice check.
What IELTS itself calls each band
IELTS gives every whole band a name, which it calls a "skill level". These names are the closest thing to an official definition of a good score (IELTS scoring in detail):
| Band | IELTS skill level | What it means, in short |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Expert | Full command; appropriate, accurate and fluent |
| 8 | Very good | Full command with occasional unsystematic mistakes |
| 7 | Good | Operational command, with occasional mistakes and misunderstandings |
| 6 | Competent | Effective command despite some mistakes |
| 5 | Modest | Partial command; copes with overall meaning, many mistakes |
Scores go up in half bands, so 7.5 is a real score too. Half bands sit between two names: 6.5 is between Competent and Good, 7.5 between Good and Very good. As a rough guide to the CEFR scale, 6.0 is B2, 6.5 is at the top of B2 and close to the C1 border, and IELTS suggests 7.0 for a confident C1. The CEFR comparison is approximate; the full chart is in our guide to IELTS and CEFR levels. Your overall band is the average of the four skills, rounded to the nearest half band, as explained in how the IELTS band score is calculated.
Average IELTS score in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan
IELTS publishes average scores by nationality every year. The latest file covers test takers in 2024-2025. Here are the Academic averages for Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, skill by skill. The last three rows are our own count from the same official tables.
| IELTS Academic, 2024-2025 | Kazakhstan | Uzbekistan |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 6.30 | 5.99 |
| Reading | 6.50 | 6.37 |
| Writing | 5.81 | 5.81 |
| Speaking | 6.15 | 5.86 |
| Overall | 6.25 | 6.07 |
| Overall 6.5 or higher | 50% | 41% |
| Overall 7.0 or higher | 31% | 23% |
| Place among the 40 nationalities listed | 28th | 32nd |
What stands out:
- Writing is the weakest skill in both countries, at 5.81. That is common: Writing was the lowest skill for 31 of the 40 nationalities in the Academic table. If Writing holds your overall back, see what changes between Writing 6.5 and 7.
- Reading is the strongest, at 6.50 in Kazakhstan and 6.37 in Uzbekistan.
- About half of test takers from Kazakhstan and 4 in 10 from Uzbekistan reach 6.5 overall. A 7.0 puts you in roughly the top third of test takers from Kazakhstan and the top quarter from Uzbekistan.
Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan appear only in the Academic table: the General Training table lists 40 other nationalities, so there is no official General Training average for either country. IELTS also gives averages by first language. For Academic, test takers whose first language is Kazakh averaged 6.20, Uzbek 6.04 and Russian 6.59.
Average IELTS score by country
For comparison, here are a few other nationalities from the same file. It has no single worldwide average. Split by gender, women averaged 6.25 and men 6.19 in Academic.
| Nationality | Academic | General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (highest Academic average) | 7.57 | 7.23 |
| Russian Federation | 6.86 | 6.86 |
| India | 6.58 | 6.50 |
| Kazakhstan | 6.25 | Not listed |
| Uzbekistan | 6.07 | Not listed |
| China | 5.91 | 6.28 |
| Japan | 5.82 | 5.79 |
Read these numbers with care:
- They describe people who took IELTS, not everyone in a country.
- IELTS lists its largest nationalities in alphabetical order, not every country, so "28th" means 28th among the 40 listed.
- IELTS says the figures are "broadly in line with statistics for previous years".
Across the 40 nationalities in the Academic table, 21 averaged 6.5 or more, and only 4 averaged 7.0 or more: Germany, Spain, Malaysia and Italy. So an overall 7.0 is above the average of 36 of the 40.
Good for what? What universities, visas and regulators ask for
Averages tell you where you stand. Requirements tell you whether you're done. We checked these official pages on 29 September 2026. Rules change, so confirm on the page for your own course or visa before you book a test.
For study
| Goal | IELTS needed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Nazarbayev University, Foundation Year (Regular Admission) | 5.5 overall; 5.5 in Writing and Reading, 5.0 in Listening and Speaking | NU admissions |
| Nazarbayev University, undergraduate (Regular Admission) | 6.0 overall; 6.0 in Writing, 5.5 in the other skills | NU admissions |
| WIUT (Tashkent), BSc Computer Science | 6.5 overall, at least 6.0 in Writing | WIUT |
| University of Toronto, undergraduate | 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 | U of T admissions |
| University of Toronto, graduate | 7.0 overall, at least 6.5 in each skill | U of T graduate studies |
| UK Student visa, degree level | CEFR B2; your university can assess your English itself | gov.uk |
These are examples, not a ranking. Nazarbayev University's figures are for Regular Admission; its page sends applicants for financial aid and scholarships to separate requirements. Two patterns repeat. The undergraduate courses ask for 6.0 to 6.5 overall and the graduate course for more. And almost every page adds a minimum for each skill. Nazarbayev University and the University of Toronto also say they don't combine your best skills from different test dates. If a course also accepts TOEFL or Duolingo, see how IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo compare.
For visas and work
| Goal | IELTS needed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| UK route needing a SELT at B1, e.g. study below degree level | IELTS for UKVI: 4.0 in each skill | gov.uk SELT list |
| UK route needing a SELT at B2, e.g. a new Skilled Worker visa | IELTS for UKVI: 5.5 in each skill | gov.uk, SELT list |
| Canada Express Entry, Federal Skilled Worker (minimum CLB 7) | General Training: 6.0 in each skill | IRCC |
| Canada, CLB 9 (more points) | General Training: Listening 8.0; Reading, Writing and Speaking 7.0 | IRCC |
| Australia, competent English | 6 in each skill | Home Affairs |
| Australia, proficient English | 7 in each skill | Home Affairs |
| Australia, superior English | 8 in each skill | Home Affairs |
| UK nurses and midwives (NMC) | Academic: 7 in Reading, Listening and Speaking; 6.5 in Writing | NMC |
A few details change the answer:
- Not every UK route needs a test. Other ways of proving English may be accepted, such as a degree taught in English, and for degree-level study your university can assess your English itself. If your route does require a Secure English Language Test (SELT) and you use IELTS, it must be IELTS for UKVI for routes that test all four skills, or IELTS Life Skills for routes that test only speaking and listening. The visa rules set the CEFR level; the gov.uk list of approved tests sets the IELTS score for each level. Which test to book for each route is in our guide to IELTS for UKVI vs Academic.
- Canada takes only General Training for Express Entry, and IRCC says: "We don't accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry." The NMC doesn't accept One Skill Retake either. If you plan to use one, check the rules in our One Skill Retake guide.
- Australia sets the level per visa. Check your visa subclass page for which level it needs and how old your result may be.
- In Uzbekistan, 7.0 is worth money. Under Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 209, the state compensates the exam fee for an IELTS result of 7 or higher. It applies to citizens (and stateless permanent residents) who were under 31 on the test day and apply within 180 days of the date the certificate was issued (lex.uz). Details are in our guide to IELTS registration in Uzbekistan.
Where learners start: first mock exams vs national averages
How do practice results compare with these numbers? We looked at the first full mock exam (all four skills) that 1,054 learners took on GoPrep. We grouped them by the time zone of their device, a rough stand-in for the country.
| Group | Overall 6.5 or higher | Overall 7.0 or higher |
|---|---|---|
| Test takers from Kazakhstan, official IELTS | 50% | 31% |
| First GoPrep mocks, Kazakhstan time zone (119 learners) | 23% | 11% |
| Test takers from Uzbekistan, official IELTS | 41% | 23% |
| First GoPrep mocks, Uzbekistan time zone (458 learners) | 22% | 10% |
| All first GoPrep mocks (1,054 learners) | 26% | 12% |
The average first mock was 5.5 overall in both the Kazakhstan and the Uzbekistan group, while the official averages are 6.25 and 6.07. This is not a like-for-like comparison, and it doesn't show that one group is stronger than the other:
- the official figures come from people on test day; these are learners' first recorded full mocks on GoPrep, and we don't know how much preparation they had already done;
- a mock exam is not IELTS, and on GoPrep Writing and Speaking are scored by AI;
- a device time zone is not a nationality.
In this sample, about 3 in 4 first recorded full mocks were below 6.5.
Why 6.5 overall is not the same as "6.5, no band below 6.0"
A minimum for each skill changes the picture more than the overall does. Here is how many of the same 1,054 first mock exams already met each rule from the tables above:
| Requirement | What it takes | First mocks that met it |
|---|---|---|
| Overall 6.5, no skill minimum | 6.5 overall | 26% |
| University of Toronto, undergraduate | 6.5 overall, none below 6.0 | 15% |
| UK visa at B2 (IELTS for UKVI) | 5.5 in each skill | 34% |
| Nazarbayev University, undergraduate (Regular Admission) | 6.0 overall; Writing 6.0; others 5.5 | 24% |
| Australia, competent English | 6 in each skill | 16% |
| Uzbekistan fee compensation | 7.0 overall | 12% |
| UK nurses and midwives (NMC) | 7 in Reading, Listening, Speaking; Writing 6.5 | 24 of 1,054 |
| Australia, proficient English | 7 in each skill | 15 of 1,054 |
Compare the first two rows. 26% of first mocks reached 6.5 overall, but only 15% reached 6.5 with no skill below 6.0. The difference comes from one or more skills below 6.0: of the 121 mocks with 6.5 overall that missed the minimum, 107 of 121 missed it in exactly one skill and 14 of 121 in two. The skill below 6.0 was Listening in 53 of 121, Writing in 40, Reading in 28 and Speaking in 14 (a mock can count twice). Canada's Express Entry is not in this table because it needs General Training, and the mock exams in this sample were all Academic.
Which skill blocks each requirement
Across all 1,054 first mocks, here is which skills were below the minimum in the mocks that missed three common requirements:
| Requirement | First mocks that missed it | Below the minimum: Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking |
|---|---|---|
| UK route needing a SELT at B2 (5.5 in each skill) | 700 of 1,054 (66%) | 65% / 65% / 63% / 20% |
| Nazarbayev University, undergraduate (Regular Admission) | 796 of 1,054 (76%) | 57% / 57% / 78% / 18% |
| Australia, competent English (6 in each skill) | 890 of 1,054 (84%) | 74% / 70% / 70% / 34% |
Speaking was the skill least often below the minimum. Listening, Reading and Writing were each below it in 57% to 78% of the mocks that missed a requirement, and Writing led for Nazarbayev University, which sets a higher minimum for Writing (6.0) than for the other skills (5.5). When your requirement has a minimum for each skill, your weakest skill decides whether your score is good enough.
How to set your own target in 4 steps
- List every place that will see your result: university, visa, employer, scholarship. For each one, write down the overall, the minimum for each skill and the test it accepts: Academic or General Training, and whether it must be the IELTS for UKVI version (UKVI comes in both).
- Check whether one test can satisfy everyone. If one place needs General Training and another Academic, or only one needs the UKVI version, plan those tests separately.
- For places that accept the same test, take the highest number in each column. If a course asks for 6.5 overall with 6.0 in Writing and a visa asks for 6.0 in every skill, your real target is 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in every skill.
- Check the dates. IELTS recommends that results count for two years, but organisations set their own limits and check dates. See how long your IELTS result is valid.
Then compare the target with where you are now. Work from your four skill scores, not just your rounded overall: half a band in one skill may be enough, but some profiles need a larger total increase. Here are two candidates with the same overall 6.5 and the same target, 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each skill (the University of Toronto graduate rule). The overall is the average of the four skills rounded to the nearest half band, so 7.0 needs a total of at least 27 (rounding rule).
| Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking | Now | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| 7.0, 7.0, 6.0, 6.5 | Total 26.5, overall 6.5; Writing below 6.5 | +0.5 in Writing: total 27, overall 7.0, every skill 6.5 or higher |
| 6.5, 6.5, 6.0, 6.0 | Total 25, overall 6.5; Writing and Speaking below 6.5 | +2.0 in total: for example 7.0, 7.0, 6.5, 6.5 (half a band in every skill) or 6.5, 7.0, 7.0, 6.5 |
The first candidate needs one half band in the right skill. The second needs four half bands, and at least one each in Writing and Speaking to clear the 6.5 minimum. Same overall, very different plans. Once the target is clear, how to prepare for IELTS shows how to plan the first week.
Practice: is this score good enough?
Four candidates, four goals. Use the requirement tables above to decide each case before you press "Check".
FAQ
Is 6.5 a good IELTS score?
It is above the 2024-2025 Academic averages for test takers from Kazakhstan (6.25) and Uzbekistan (6.07), and IELTS places it between Competent and Good. Whether it is enough for you depends on your requirement, including any minimum for each skill.
Is IELTS 7 considered fluent?
Not automatically. IELTS calls band 7 "Good": operational command of the language with occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings. An overall 7.0 does not tell you how fluent someone is in speaking, so check the Speaking score separately, where Fluency and Coherence is one of the four criteria.
What is the average IELTS score?
IELTS does not publish one worldwide average. In its 2024-2025 Academic data, women averaged 6.25 and men 6.19, and the averages of the 40 nationalities listed ranged from 5.41 to 7.57.
Is 8 a good IELTS score?
Yes. IELTS calls band 8 "Very good", and in the 2024-2025 Academic data only one of the 40 nationalities listed, Germany, averaged above 7.5. Australia's superior English level asks for 8 in every skill.
