It is sometimes claimed that scientific progress always improves people's lives. While I accept that science has brought enormous benefits, I disagree that it is always beneficial.

The advantages are undeniable. Advances in medicine, from vaccines to antibiotics, have dramatically increased life expectancy and eliminated diseases that once killed millions. Technologies such as refrigeration, electricity and the internet have made daily life safer, more comfortable and better connected. Agricultural science has allowed food production to keep pace with a growing population, preventing the famines that were common in the past.

Nevertheless, science can also cause harm, either through its application or through unforeseen side effects. Nuclear research produced clean energy, but it also led to weapons capable of destroying whole cities. The development of fossil-fuel engines transformed transport, yet their emissions are now a major cause of climate change. Social media was designed to connect people, but evidence suggests that it contributes to anxiety, loneliness and the spread of false information, especially among teenagers. In each case, the science itself was not at fault; it was how society used it, or its consequences that nobody anticipated. Moreover, the benefits are not always shared equally, as expensive treatments or technologies may be available only to wealthy people, which can widen existing inequalities.

For this reason, scientific progress needs to be guided by ethics and regulation. Governments should require careful testing of new technologies, and public debate should accompany major developments such as artificial intelligence.

In conclusion, science has improved life in countless ways, but it does not automatically do so. Whether progress is beneficial depends on how responsibly it is developed and used, so I disagree that it is always good.
