Some people think parents should be strict with their children, while others believe children should be given more freedom. In my opinion, the best approach is a balance, with firm rules on important matters and freedom in others.

Those who support strictness argue that children need clear boundaries. Rules about homework, bedtime and behaviour teach discipline, which helps children to concentrate at school and later to manage their time at work. Strict parents may also protect their children from risks, such as unsuitable websites or dangerous friends, because young people lack the experience to judge them. Research in some cultures links firm guidance to high academic achievement.

On the other hand, too much control can be harmful. Children who are not permitted to make any decisions may become anxious, dependent or secretive, and some rebel strongly as soon as they leave home. Freedom allows children to develop creativity, confidence and problem-solving skills; a child who chooses a hobby or organises their own revision learns responsibility through experience, including mistakes. Excessive strictness can also damage the relationship, since children who fear punishment may stop sharing their problems with their parents, just when they need help most.

I therefore believe that the most effective parents are those who explain their rules and are consistent but who also listen to their children. Safety, respect and education should be non-negotiable, while choices of clothes, friends and leisure activities can gradually be handed over as the child matures. This approach, often called authoritative parenting, combines warmth with structure.

In conclusion, neither extreme is ideal. Parents should set clear limits where necessary but allow growing independence, so that children learn both discipline and responsibility.
