It is sometimes argued that mental health should receive as much attention as physical health in schools and workplaces. I strongly agree with this view, although putting it into practice poses certain difficulties.

Mental wellbeing deserves equal priority because it affects almost every aspect of life. Students who suffer from anxiety or depression find it hard to concentrate and learn, and employees under severe stress are less productive, more often absent and more likely to leave. Untreated problems can also lead to serious consequences, including self-harm and long-term illness. Despite this, physical health usually receives far more attention: schools provide sports lessons and first-aid kits, and workplaces offer safety training, but few offer regular support for emotions. A school that employs a trained counsellor and teaches pupils to manage stress, for example, can identify difficulties early and prevent them from becoming crises. Treating mental and physical health equally would also help to reduce the stigma that stops many people from asking for help.

There are practical difficulties. Qualified counsellors are expensive and in short supply, mental health problems are less visible than a broken arm, and some employers or parents fear that talking about the subject could make matters worse. Privacy must be protected carefully.

These obstacles can be overcome. Governments could fund training and employment of counsellors, while schools and companies can train existing staff to recognise warning signs and refer people to specialists. Confidential helplines, flexible working arrangements and regular conversations about wellbeing would be inexpensive and effective measures. Clear rules on confidentiality would build trust.

In conclusion, mental health is as important as physical health, and schools and workplaces should give it equal attention. The challenges are real, but they are far smaller than the cost of ignoring the problem.
