More and more adults and teenagers spend most of their free time online and find it difficult to stop. This essay will discuss the problems this causes and propose some measures.

The consequences are considerable. Physically, long hours in front of a screen reduce exercise and disturb sleep, which can lead to obesity, eye strain and constant tiredness. Mentally, heavy users often report anxiety and low mood, partly because social media encourages comparison with other people's apparently perfect lives. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable, and their grades may fall when homework is replaced by gaming or scrolling. Relationships also suffer, since people who are absorbed in their phones spend less time talking to family and friends, and workers who are constantly distracted by notifications become less productive.

Solutions require action at several levels. Individuals can set limits by using apps that track screen time, switching off notifications and keeping phones out of the bedroom. Parents can agree on family rules, such as no devices at meals, and should set an example themselves. Schools can teach students about the design tricks used to hold attention, and promote clubs and sports that provide attractive alternatives to the internet. Technology companies should take responsibility too, by removing features that encourage endless scrolling, and governments could regulate the way platforms target young users. South Korea, for instance, has introduced counselling centres for people with severe internet dependence. For serious cases, professional treatment should be available and free from stigma.

In conclusion, excessive internet use harms health, mental wellbeing, education and relationships. Personal discipline, family and school support, and responsible regulation of technology firms could help people to regain control.
