Today many people follow the recommendations of social media personalities in preference to those of qualified professionals. This essay will explain why this happens and argue that it is, on the whole, a negative trend.

There are several reasons for this behaviour. Influencers tend to speak in a friendly, personal style, as if talking to a friend, whereas experts often use technical language that sounds distant. Followers also see them every day, sharing their breakfast, workouts and problems, and this constant presence creates a sense of familiarity and trust. In addition, many people believe that influencers have no hidden agenda, while they suspect that doctors, scientists or officials are protecting institutions or commercial interests. Finally, a video that shows someone achieving results feels more convincing than a statistic.

However, I believe this trend is harmful. Much of the advice offered is in fact paid promotion, and the person recommending a supplement or investment scheme may earn a commission for every sale, even though this is not always clear. Furthermore, influencers usually have no formal training in the subjects they discuss. The danger is greatest in health, where tips about extreme diets, unproven remedies or avoiding vaccines can cause real damage. A fitness blogger may suggest a routine that suits her own body but injures a beginner. Experts, by contrast, base their advice on research and are accountable for mistakes.

That said, influencers can play a useful role by making expert knowledge more accessible, particularly when they invite professionals onto their channels or share reliable sources. Problems arise only when popularity replaces evidence.

In conclusion, people trust influencers because they seem relatable and honest, but relying on them rather than on experts exposes audiences to misleading and sometimes dangerous advice.
