Some people argue that newspapers and websites should leave the private lives of celebrities alone. I largely agree with this view, although I accept that there are exceptions when the public interest is involved.

The main reason for protecting celebrities is that everyone has a right to privacy, whether famous or not. An actor or footballer who chooses a public career has not agreed to have their family, health or relationships examined by strangers. Constant attention can seriously affect mental health, and there are well-known cases of stars who have been harassed by photographers, sometimes with tragic results. In addition, much gossip is inaccurate. Stories are often based on rumours, edited photographs or invented quotes, and once they are published the damage to a reputation is hard to repair. Finally, this kind of coverage distracts readers from important matters. When front pages are filled with news of a singer's divorce, there is less space for reports on the economy, health or foreign affairs.

Nevertheless, there are good reasons why some coverage is acceptable. Public figures benefit from fame and often use media attention to promote their careers, so they cannot expect complete invisibility. People are naturally curious about those they admire, and magazines meet that demand. More importantly, investigation can expose wrongdoing; if a politician hides financial dealings or a famous person abuses their power, journalists are right to report it.

On balance, I believe a clear line should be drawn. Details of family life, health and personal relationships should remain private unless they affect the public, while behaviour linked to a person's public role, such as corruption or dishonesty, can fairly be reported.

In conclusion, the media should respect celebrities' privacy in most cases, with exceptions only where there is a genuine public interest.
