Celebrity influence on youth: أفكار لمقال IELTS

Some people say that famous people strongly influence the way young people dress, speak and behave, and that this influence is mostly harmful. I partly agree, but I think the effect depends on the individual celebrity.

It is true that celebrities can set unhealthy examples. Many promote an unrealistic body image through edited photographs, which can lead teenagers to feel dissatisfied with their appearance and, in extreme cases, to develop eating disorders. Others display extravagant lifestyles, encouraging young fans to value expensive possessions and fame above education and hard work. A pop star who is widely reported to take drugs or behave aggressively may make such conduct seem acceptable, and young people, who are still forming their identities, are particularly likely to imitate their idols. Advertising adds to the problem, as celebrities are paid to promote products such as fast food or fashion that fans may not be able to afford.

On the other hand, the influence is not always negative. Many famous people use their position to promote good causes. Footballers who campaign against racism or who donate to charities, and actors who speak about mental health, encourage young followers to be tolerant and to talk about their problems. Successful athletes can show the value of discipline and perseverance, inspiring teenagers to take up sport or study harder. The result depends largely on whom the young person chooses to follow and on the guidance received from parents and teachers.

Rather than blaming celebrities alone, parents and schools should teach young people to think critically about the images they see.

In conclusion, celebrity influence can be harmful when it promotes unrealistic or reckless lifestyles, but it can also be positive, so I agree only partially with the statement.
