Some people predict that cash will soon disappear because everyone will pay by card or phone. I disagree that it will vanish entirely in the near future, although digital payment is certainly growing.

There are good reasons for the growth of cashless payment. Paying by phone or card is fast and convenient: there is no need to carry notes or count change, and transactions are recorded automatically, which helps people to track their spending. Businesses benefit from quicker service and lower risks of theft or counting errors, and during the pandemic many shops encouraged contactless payments for hygiene reasons. In countries like Sweden and China, mobile payments are already so common that many small stalls and even street musicians accept them.

Nevertheless, several barriers make the end of cash unlikely. Some groups, such as elderly people, those without bank accounts and rural residents with poor internet, may find digital payment difficult or impossible, and removing cash would exclude them from daily life. Electronic systems also depend on power and networks; when a system fails or there is a cyber attack, shops cannot trade, whereas cash always works. Privacy matters too, because every digital payment leaves a trace that companies or governments could use, and some people prefer to keep purchases private. Cash remains useful for budgeting, as many find it easier to limit their spending when they can see the money going.

For these reasons, I expect that digital methods will dominate, but cash will survive as a backup and an option for those who need it. Several governments have even passed laws requiring shops to accept notes and coins to protect inclusion.

In conclusion, digital payment will continue to expand, but exclusion, reliability and privacy concerns mean that cash will not disappear soon.
