Translation applications have improved dramatically, leading some people to say that learning foreign languages is no longer necessary. I disagree with this view, although I accept that these tools are very useful.

There is no doubt about the convenience of translation technology. Apps can translate a menu or a road sign instantly, and many do so free of charge. For a tourist who is visiting a country for a week, this is often all that is needed, and it saves the years of study that mastering a language requires. Business travellers can also use such tools for simple emails or documents.

Nevertheless, I believe language learning remains important for several reasons. First, technology still struggles with nuance. Jokes, idioms, politeness levels and cultural references are frequently translated incorrectly, and a literal translation can cause confusion or even offence. Second, real relationships depend on direct communication. Speaking to a colleague, a neighbour or a business partner in their own language shows respect and builds trust in a way that holding up a phone does not, and conversations through an app are slow and impersonal. Third, many careers still depend on genuine language skills. Interpreters, diplomats, teachers, doctors working with international patients and engineers in global companies need to understand and respond quickly and accurately, and an app cannot take responsibility for mistakes.

Learning a language also has benefits that have nothing to do with translation. It develops memory and concentration, and gives people a deeper understanding of how other cultures think. These advantages cannot be provided by software.

In conclusion, translation apps are an excellent aid for simple tasks, but they cannot replace the accuracy, personal connection and cultural understanding that come from knowing a language, so I do not believe learning is unnecessary.
