In many countries, the gap between rich and poor people is widening. This essay will explain some reasons for this trend and suggest what governments can do to narrow the gap.

There are several causes. Technological change has increased demand for highly skilled workers, who earn high salaries, while jobs that need fewer qualifications are being automated or paid poorly. Wealth also grows on itself: people who own property and shares benefit from rising asset prices, while those who depend on wages fall behind. Globalisation has allowed companies to move production to cheaper countries, weakening workers' bargaining power in richer ones. In addition, unequal access to quality education means that children from poor families rarely have the chance to reach well-paid careers, so inequality continues from one generation to the next.

Governments have various tools to respond. A progressive tax system, in which higher earners and large fortunes pay a larger share, can fund public services that help everyone, and a decent minimum wage can lift the lowest incomes. Investment in free, high-quality schools and affordable university or vocational training would give young people from poorer backgrounds a real opportunity to improve their lives. Welfare payments and affordable housing offer security to those who cannot work, and stronger laws on tax avoidance would ensure that corporations and wealthy individuals pay what they owe. Nordic countries combine such policies and have both high living standards and relatively small income gaps.

In conclusion, growing inequality is caused by technology, globalisation, unequal ownership and unequal education, but fair taxation, education and social support can reduce it. Narrowing the gap is important not only for fairness but also for social stability and long-term economic growth.
