Some people think that all young people should be required to do unpaid community work for a few months, while others disagree. I agree with the proposal, provided that it is well organised.

The strongest argument in favour is that community service builds character and social awareness. Young people who spend time helping elderly residents, cleaning parks or working in food banks see problems that they might otherwise never encounter, and this encourages empathy and a sense of responsibility towards others. It also teaches practical skills such as teamwork, punctuality and communication, which are valuable in later employment. Because the programme would involve everyone regardless of background, teenagers from different social groups would work side by side, reducing prejudice and strengthening social unity. Communities gain as well, since volunteers can offer extra help in areas where public services are stretched. Countries such as Germany, with its voluntary social year, report that participants often continue to volunteer and gain greater confidence about their future careers.

However, critics raise valid objections. Forcing people to work may produce resentment and poor quality service, as volunteering is meant to be voluntary. Some young people may be unable to take months away from study or paid work because they must support their families, and requiring unpaid labour could therefore be unfair to them. There is also the cost of organising placements and supervising thousands of participants.

These problems can be reduced by offering choices of projects, providing small allowances to those in need, and allowing flexible timing, for example during holidays. A well-designed scheme would respect individual circumstances while delivering benefits.

In conclusion, compulsory community service can develop responsibility and unity, and with sensible safeguards its disadvantages can be managed. I therefore agree that it should be introduced.
