Some people argue that traditional dress should be worn more frequently instead of Western fashion. I agree only partly: traditional clothing deserves a more prominent place, but I do not think people should be expected to abandon modern styles.

There are good reasons to encourage traditional clothes. They are a visible expression of national identity, linking wearers to the history and values of their community. When people choose them for daily wear, they also support local craftspeople such as weavers, embroiderers and tailors, whose skills might otherwise disappear. In India, the revival of handloom saris and kurtas in recent years has created new income for rural artisans. Wearing traditional garments is therefore a practical way of keeping heritage alive, rather than leaving it in museums.

However, I believe it would be wrong to make this a general rule. Modern clothes are often more comfortable and practical, particularly for work. A factory worker, a cyclist or an office employee in a hot climate may find that jeans, trousers or sportswear suit their activities better than long, heavy or elaborate costume. In addition, what people wear is a matter of personal choice. Insisting on a particular dress code would limit individual freedom, and it could create social pressure on those who prefer another style. Fashion has also always changed naturally; many items now considered traditional began as imports from other regions.

A sensible compromise is to wear traditional clothing on festivals, national holidays and family occasions, and to combine elements of it with modern outfits in everyday life, such as an embroidered jacket with jeans.

In conclusion, traditional dress is worth promoting for cultural and economic reasons, but people should remain free to choose the clothes that best suit their lives.
