Many nations now import the majority of their food and manufactured goods instead of producing them domestically. In my opinion, the advantages of this arrangement outweigh the disadvantages, although governments need to manage the risks.

The main advantage is economic efficiency. Each country can concentrate on what it does best, whether this is growing coffee, making electronics or providing financial services, and then trade for everything else. This specialisation lowers costs, so consumers pay less for products and enjoy a much wider choice than any single country could offer. A supermarket in northern Europe, for instance, can sell tropical fruit all year round. Trade also encourages cooperation, because countries that depend on each other have strong reasons to keep good relations.

However, there are serious drawbacks. A country that relies heavily on imports is vulnerable if supplies are interrupted by war, a pandemic or a political dispute, as was seen when shortages of medical equipment and microchips appeared in recent years. Another problem is that cheap imports can destroy domestic industries, leaving workers unemployed, particularly in regions where a factory or farm was the main employer. Finally, transporting goods by ship, plane and lorry over long distances produces large amounts of carbon dioxide and adds to climate change.

Even so, I believe these risks are manageable. Governments can keep a reserve of essential items, such as grain and medicines, support workers who lose their jobs with retraining, and encourage cleaner transport. These measures preserve the benefits of lower prices and wider choice without leaving the country exposed.

In conclusion, global trade makes goods cheaper, increases variety and strengthens international ties, and its disadvantages can be reduced by sensible policy, so the benefits are greater overall.
