IELTS Speaking Part 1: Studies

The examiner asks questions like these in Part 1. Answer each one aloud in 2–3 sentences, about 20–30 seconds.

  1. What subject are you studying?
  2. Why did you choose that subject?
  3. Is there anything you dislike about your studies?
  4. Do you think your subject will be useful for your future career?
  5. What would you like to study in the future?

How to answer Part 1 questions

  • Answer the question, then add one reason or a short example.
  • Do not learn answers by heart. Part 1 is about you, and memorised answers sound memorised.
  • If a question asks why, say why. Short one-word answers cost fluency marks.
