Band 8 sample answer

262 words · about 2 minutes at a natural pace · Phrases from the vocabulary list are highlighted.

To keep fit, I go jogging three times a week, usually early in the morning before I go to work. I started about two years ago, after my doctor pointed out that I was leading a rather sedentary lifestyle, since I spend most of the day at a desk.

My route is a loop of around five kilometres through a large park near my apartment, and it takes me about thirty minutes. I go on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, at around six thirty, when it's still quiet and cool. At first I could hardly manage ten minutes without stopping, and my legs ached for days, but I stuck to the routine and built up my stamina gradually. Now I can run the whole distance without much trouble, and I'm even thinking about entering a charity race next year.

The effect on my health has been quite remarkable. For one thing, I've lost about six kilos, and my clothes fit much better. I sleep more soundly than I used to, and I'm no longer exhausted by the middle of the afternoon, so I'd say jogging has really boosted my energy levels. It's also been good for my mental health. After a run, I feel calm and positive, and I find it easier to concentrate on my work. The last time I had a check-up, my doctor said my heart rate and blood pressure were excellent. I think the most important thing is that I've turned exercise into a habit rather than a chore, and I can't imagine going back to my old routine.

What to notice

  • It takes the points on the card in order, so the examiner can follow it.
  • Each point gets a specific detail or a short story, which is what keeps a talk going for two minutes.
  • The "explain" line at the end gets the most time, because that is where you give an opinion and show your range of language.
