Band 8 sample answer
247 words · about 2 minutes at a natural pace · Phrases from the vocabulary list are highlighted.
I'd like to talk about a charity run that I took part in last spring, organised by a local non-profit group to raise money for children who need medical treatment. A colleague of mine told me about it, and since I'd been wanting to do something useful with my weekends, I signed up straight away.
The event took place in a large park on a Sunday morning, and there were around eight hundred participants. You could choose between a five-kilometre and a ten-kilometre route. I'm not a very sporty person, so I chose the shorter one, and I walked and jogged most of it. Along the way, volunteers handed out water and cheered us on, and there was a live band playing at the finish line. Every participant had paid a registration fee that went directly to the charity, and many of us had also asked friends and family to sponsor us. I managed to collect about the equivalent of two hundred dollars, which surprised me because I'd expected much less.
I think it was a really worthwhile event for several reasons. Obviously, a lot of money was raised, enough to pay for several operations. But it also brought together people of all ages, from teenagers to retired couples, who all wanted to help. It made me feel that even small contributions can add up. I've signed up for the same event this year, and I'm trying to persuade more of my friends to come with me.
What to notice
- It takes the points on the card in order, so the examiner can follow it.
- Each point gets a specific detail or a short story, which is what keeps a talk going for two minutes.
- The "explain" line at the end gets the most time, because that is where you give an opinion and show your range of language.

Frequently asked questions
How should I describe an event in an IELTS cue card?
Set the scene with when, where and who was there, then walk through what happened in order. Finish with why it was memorable. If you were not at a big event, a small one you remember well works better.
