Some people believe that sign language should be a regular subject in all schools. I agree with this suggestion, although I recognise that there are practical difficulties.

The strongest reason is inclusion. Deaf and hearing-impaired people often face isolation, since few others can communicate with them. If more pupils learned sign language, deaf classmates would be able to make friends and take part fully in school life, and later in the community as well. A generation of signers would also make public services and workplaces more accessible. Beyond this, it is a valuable additional skill. Learning to sign develops visual memory and coordination, and it can be fun for children, who enjoy its expressive and physical nature. It is useful in other situations too, such as communicating underwater or across a noisy room. Finally, it raises awareness of disability in general, teaching children empathy and respect for people who are different from themselves.

There are, however, counter-arguments. Most people will rarely meet a deaf person who needs sign language, so the practical use for the majority is limited. Teaching it requires qualified instructors, who are scarce, and a place in the timetable, which could reduce time for other subjects. Some argue that other languages, such as English or Chinese, would be more beneficial for careers.

Even so, these objections do not seem decisive. A basic course for a few hours each term would not take much time away from other subjects, and training programmes could develop instructors, including deaf teachers, who would also gain employment. The social benefits are greater than the cost.

In conclusion, teaching sign language in schools promotes inclusion and awareness and gives children a useful skill, so I believe it should be introduced widely.
