Opinions differ on whether old city buildings should be preserved or demolished to make way for modern developments. I will discuss both views and then explain why I believe that only the most valuable buildings should be protected.

Supporters of preservation argue that old buildings are a link to a city's history and identity. They show earlier architecture and craftsmanship, give residents a sense of belonging and attract tourists, who spend money in local shops and hotels. Once a historic building is destroyed it cannot be replaced, and a city filled with identical glass towers loses its character. Cities such as Prague and Edinburgh are admired largely because they have kept their historic centres. Reusing old structures can also be more sustainable than demolishing them and building anew, since it avoids the large carbon cost of new construction.

On the other hand, those in favour of redevelopment point out that cities must grow and adapt. Many old buildings are costly to maintain, difficult to heat and unsafe or unsuitable for modern needs, such as accessibility for disabled people. Replacing them with new homes, offices or hospitals can provide badly needed space for a growing population and create jobs. If every old structure were protected, development would be blocked and housing would become even more expensive.

In my opinion, a sensible balance is needed. Buildings of real architectural or historical significance should be legally protected, and others can often be adapted for new uses, as with old factories converted into flats or galleries. Only those that are unsafe or of little value should be demolished.

In conclusion, both heritage and progress matter, and the best approach is selective protection combined with creative reuse.
