Some people believe that every student should have to study a foreign language throughout their school years. I agree with this idea, as the benefits are considerable, although it needs to be taught well.
The first advantage is cognitive. Learning another language improves memory, concentration and problem-solving, and research suggests that bilingual people may even be better protected against mental decline in old age. There are career benefits too: in a globalised economy, employees who speak more than one language are more attractive to employers, particularly in tourism, trade and diplomacy. In addition, language lessons open the door to other cultures, which promotes tolerance and understanding. A teenager who learns Spanish, for example, is likely to take an interest in the music, history and customs of Spanish-speaking countries, and may be more confident when travelling.
Critics argue that the school curriculum is already crowded and that forcing students to study a language reduces time for subjects they care about. They also point out that pupils who lack interest or talent can become demoralised, especially if they do not expect ever to use the language. These concerns are understandable, but they can be answered. Lessons can be made more motivating through conversation, films, songs and exchange programmes rather than grammar drills alone, and pupils can choose which language to study according to their interests. Starting in primary school, when children learn most naturally, also makes the process easier and less stressful. Technology now offers free apps and online tutors that can support classroom teaching and let students practise at their own speed.
In conclusion, compulsory language learning develops the mind, improves job prospects and encourages cultural awareness. I therefore firmly agree that it should be part of every student's education.
