Birinci görüş

  • Animals can feel pain, so testing is cruel
  • Computer models and cell tests are available
  • Results in animals do not always apply to humans

İkinci görüş

  • It protects human lives by testing safety
  • Many medicines were developed this way
  • Alternatives are not yet complete

Whether animals should be used in scientific experiments is a difficult ethical question. Some people believe it should never happen, while others argue that it is necessary for developing medicines. I will discuss both sides, and I will argue for limited and strictly regulated use.

Opponents of animal testing point out that animals can suffer pain and fear, and that humans have no right to cause this for their own benefit. They also note that animals are biologically different from people, so results are not always reliable; a drug that appears safe in mice may still harm humans. Modern alternatives, such as computer modelling and tests on human cells grown in laboratories, are becoming more sophisticated and could replace many experiments in the future. Cosmetics testing on animals has already been banned in several countries because the benefit seemed too small to justify the suffering.

On the other hand, supporters argue that many life-saving treatments, including vaccines and insulin, were developed with the help of animal research. Before a new drug is given to patients, researchers need to observe how a whole living body responds, which is something cells in a dish cannot fully show. Abandoning animal testing altogether could therefore put human volunteers at risk or slow the discovery of cures for serious diseases such as cancer.

In my opinion, a total ban is unrealistic at present, but animal testing should be limited to cases where there is no alternative and the medical purpose is serious. Laboratories should follow strict welfare rules, minimise the number of animals used and invest in alternative methods.

In conclusion, animal experiments raise valid moral concerns, yet they remain necessary for now, so careful regulation is a better solution than either a ban or unrestricted use.
