Nevertheless, there are drawbacks. Subsidies are expensive and are paid by taxpayers, including those who never use public transport, and the money could be spent on schools or hospitals. Some research suggests that free travel attracts mainly people who would otherwise walk or cycle, rather than motorists, which reduces the environmental benefit.

These problems can be addressed by targeting subsidies at those who need them most, such as discounts for students and pensioners, and by ensuring that part of the funding goes to improving frequency and reliability.

In conclusion, subsidised public transport reduces traffic and pollution and promotes fairness. Although it costs public money, I believe that the benefits are greater, provided it is carefully managed.
