Compulsory military service exists in several countries, and some people see it as a beneficial policy for young people. I disagree with this view to a large extent, although I accept that it has some advantages.

Those who support conscription argue that it teaches discipline, teamwork and practical skills. Young people from different backgrounds live and train together, which can reduce social divisions and build a shared national identity. Countries facing real security threats, such as South Korea or Israel, also need a large trained reserve to defend themselves. Furthermore, recruits often learn first aid, technical trades and leadership, which can help them later in civilian life.

However, I believe these benefits do not justify forcing everyone to serve. Firstly, the service interrupts education and careers at the very age when people begin to build their futures. A talented student who spends eighteen months in uniform may lose momentum, and employers have to wait for young staff to start work. Secondly, compelling people to enter an institution they have no wish to join is a restriction of personal freedom, and unwilling soldiers are rarely effective ones. Reluctant conscripts can also become resentful, and some face harsh treatment. Finally, the system is costly. Training, housing and equipping hundreds of thousands of people every year places a heavy burden on the budget, and the same money could be spent on schools or hospitals.

Discipline and teamwork can be taught in other ways, for example through voluntary national service programmes, sports or community projects. A professional army, paid properly and chosen by volunteers, is usually better trained than a conscript force.

In conclusion, although military service can foster unity and defence capacity, the cost to individual freedom, education and public finances means that it is not a positive development in my opinion.
