Spending on space exploration: IELTS essay ideas

Plan this opinion essay about science with the ideas and outline below, write it on a 40-minute timer, then compare it with a band-8 model answer.

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Governments should spend money on space exploration instead of solving problems on Earth.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

GoPrep wrote this practice question in the style of the exam. It is not an official IELTS question.

Ideas for both sides

Pick two or three points from one or both columns. You do not need all of them, and your own examples score better than memorised ones.

Reasons to agree

  • Space research produces new technologies
  • It inspires young scientists
  • Long-term survival may depend on other planets

Reasons to disagree

  • Poverty, hunger and disease are more urgent
  • Costs are enormous
  • Money should serve citizens first

Some people claim that governments should spend money on exploring space rather than on solving problems on Earth. I strongly disagree, although I recognise that space programmes bring some benefits.

It is fair to acknowledge what space exploration has achieved. Satellites provide weather forecasts, navigation and global communications, and technologies developed for space missions, such as lightweight materials and medical imaging, have found everyday uses. Exploration also inspires young people to study science and expands our understanding of the universe, and some scientists believe that studying other planets may help us understand climate change on our own.

However, the problems facing people on Earth are far more urgent. Hundreds of millions of people lack clean drinking water, enough food or basic healthcare, and preventable diseases still kill children every day. Climate change threatens coastlines and harvests, and education systems in many countries are underfunded. The cost of a single large space mission can reach billions of dollars; the same money could build hospitals, provide vaccines or fund renewable energy for entire regions. Governments have a duty to protect the lives and welfare of their citizens first, and it is difficult to justify sending a probe to Mars while families in the same country cannot afford medicine.

Moreover, much valuable space research is now carried out by private companies, which reduces the need for public money. Governments can therefore keep a small budget for scientific cooperation while directing the bulk of their spending towards immediate needs.

In conclusion, space exploration has real scientific value, but because suffering and environmental damage on Earth demand urgent action, I believe that governments should give priority to solving earthly problems rather than replacing that spending with space programmes.
