Some people argue that wildlife documentaries and nature programmes do more to protect the environment than government laws. I disagree with this view, although I accept that such programmes make a valuable contribution.

Documentaries do have a powerful effect on public attitudes. Series such as Blue Planet showed millions of viewers the damage caused by plastic in the oceans, and the response was rapid: supermarkets pledged to cut plastic packaging and many people changed their buying habits. By revealing beautiful animals and fragile habitats, programmes create an emotional bond that statistics cannot, and this can inspire donations, volunteering and political pressure. They also educate children, who may develop a lifelong interest in nature.

However, awareness alone does not guarantee protection. A documentary can persuade a viewer to care, but it cannot stop a logging company from cutting down a rainforest or a factory from polluting a river. Only laws, backed by inspections and penalties, can do this. Legislation establishes national parks, bans the hunting of endangered species and limits emissions, and it applies to everyone, whether they have watched a programme or not. The recovery of species such as the humpback whale followed international agreements that restricted whaling, rather than television coverage alone. Furthermore, the impact of documentaries is often short-lived, as attention moves on after a few weeks, while laws remain in force permanently.

In practice, the two work together. Documentaries build the public support that encourages governments to pass strong environmental laws, and the laws turn that concern into lasting action.

In conclusion, nature programmes play a helpful role in raising awareness, but they cannot replace legislation. I therefore believe government laws are more effective in protecting the environment.
