Some farmers now grow crops whose genes have been altered so that they resist pests and give larger harvests. In my opinion, the advantages of this technology outweigh the disadvantages, provided it is properly regulated.

The main advantage is the potential to produce more food. Higher yields and crops that survive drought or disease can reduce hunger, particularly in regions where harvests are unreliable. Because the plants resist insects, farmers need fewer chemical pesticides, which lowers their costs and limits pollution. Genetic modification can also extend shelf life, so that less fruit and vegetables rot before reaching consumers. One example is golden rice, which has been developed to contain vitamin A to help prevent blindness in children in poor countries.

Critics raise several concerns. Some fear that eating modified food could affect human health, and others worry that modified plants could spread their genes to wild relatives and harm ecosystems. There is also a social issue. A small number of large companies control the patents on modified seeds, so farmers must buy new ones every year and can become dependent on those companies. Finally, planting a few high-yield varieties over large areas can reduce natural biodiversity, making agriculture more vulnerable to new diseases.

These fears should be taken seriously, but so far major scientific bodies have found no evidence that approved modified foods are unsafe to eat. The other risks can be controlled by strict testing before crops are approved, labelling so that consumers can choose, and public research that makes improved seeds available at fair prices. Farmers can also keep traditional varieties alongside new ones to protect diversity.

In conclusion, genetically modified crops can increase food supplies and reduce chemical use, and with sensible regulation their risks are manageable, so the advantages are greater.
