Some people believe that environmental education should be a compulsory subject in every school. I agree with this view, because young people will have to deal with the consequences of environmental damage.

The first reason is that children need knowledge to make informed choices. Climate change, pollution and loss of wildlife will shape the world that today's students inherit, yet many of them do not understand the causes or the possible solutions. A dedicated subject can explain, for example, how energy use leads to emissions, or why recycling and reducing waste matter. Habits formed in childhood tend to last, so pupils who learn to save water and sort their rubbish are likely to continue doing so as adults. Children can also influence their families: a child who has studied recycling at school often persuades parents to change their routines at home.

A second reason is that society needs skills for the future. Green industries such as renewable energy and sustainable farming are growing, and they will require engineers, scientists and planners. Schools that introduce environmental topics early can inspire students to follow such careers. In Germany and Finland, outdoor learning and projects such as school gardens have been used to combine theory with practice.

Critics argue that the timetable is already crowded and that environmental topics could be covered within geography or science. This is partly true, but making the subject compulsory ensures that every student receives the same basic knowledge, rather than leaving it to individual teachers' interests.

In conclusion, compulsory environmental education equips young people with knowledge and habits they need and prepares them for future careers. I therefore agree that it should be taught in all schools.
