In some countries, teenagers may legally drive from the age of sixteen. Although this gives young people real benefits, I believe the disadvantages are more serious.

The main advantage is independence. A sixteen-year-old who can drive no longer depends on parents for lifts to school, part-time work or sports training, which relieves pressure on busy families. This matters most in rural areas, where buses are infrequent and the nearest town may be twenty kilometres away. Driving also teaches responsibility early, because a young person must pay for fuel, insure the car and obey the law. In parts of the American Midwest, for instance, farm teenagers routinely drive to jobs that would otherwise be out of reach.

However, the dangers are considerable. Statistics from many countries show that drivers under twenty are involved in far more serious accidents than any other age group. Teenagers tend to underestimate risk, to show off in front of friends and to be easily distracted by phones, and their judgement is still developing. A single moment of poor decision-making can cost lives, including those of passengers and pedestrians. In addition, lowering the minimum age puts more vehicles on the road, which increases congestion and emissions, particularly around schools and city centres.

Some of these problems could be reduced through graduated licences, which restrict night driving and the number of passengers a new driver may carry. Even so, such measures reduce the danger rather than remove it.

In conclusion, driving at sixteen offers freedom and early responsibility, but these gains are outweighed by higher accident rates and the immaturity of young drivers. I therefore believe the minimum age should be set higher.
