For individuals, cycling is an inexpensive and healthy way to travel. Regular riding strengthens the heart, helps to control weight and lifts mood, and cyclists avoid the costs of fuel, parking and public transport tickets. It can also be quicker than driving for short journeys in congested areas. Cities benefit too, because fewer cars mean less congestion, lower noise and cleaner air, and reduced pollution lowers health costs. Cycling requires far less space than cars, so streets can be used more efficiently. Copenhagen, where a large proportion of residents commute by bike, is often praised as a calm, healthy and attractive city as a result.
However, many people hesitate to cycle because they fear accidents, so safety must be improved. The most effective step is to build protected cycle lanes that are physically separated from traffic, together with safe crossings and well-lit routes. Lowering speed limits in residential areas and enforcing them would reduce the danger from vehicles. Drivers need to be educated about sharing the road and held responsible when they endanger cyclists, while cyclists should be encouraged to wear helmets and use lights at night. Secure parking and bike repair points would give additional encouragement, and schools can provide cycling training so that children learn road skills early.
In conclusion, cycling improves personal health and saves money while making cities cleaner and less crowded. By investing in separate lanes, stricter traffic rules and education, councils can make it a safe and attractive choice for many more people.
