Air travel is growing rapidly as flights become cheaper and more people can afford to fly. This essay will examine the environmental problems caused by this trend and suggest some possible solutions.
Aviation harms the environment in several ways. Aircraft burn large quantities of fossil fuel, releasing carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming, and the water vapour and nitrogen oxides they emit at high altitude add to the effect. Airports also generate noise that disturbs nearby residents and increase air pollution and road traffic in surrounding areas, while their expansion can destroy natural habitats. Because flying is the fastest-growing source of emissions in some countries, it risks cancelling out progress made in other sectors such as electricity.
Several measures could help. Governments can raise taxes on flights, particularly frequent and short-haul journeys, and use the revenue to improve rail links so that trains become a realistic alternative; France has already banned some domestic flights where a fast train exists. Airlines and manufacturers should be encouraged to develop more efficient engines and sustainable fuels made from waste or plants. Passengers can contribute by choosing direct routes, flying less often and holding more meetings online. Carbon offsetting schemes may also help, although they should supplement rather than replace real reductions. Governments could also require airlines to publish the emissions per passenger, so that travellers can compare options and choose the cleaner one.
In conclusion, the growth of air travel damages the climate and local communities, but a combination of taxation, cleaner technology and changes in behaviour could limit the harm. Since people are unlikely to give up flying altogether, a realistic goal is to make it substantially cleaner and less frequent.
