I would like to talk about a small village called Arslanbob in the south of Kyrgyzstan. It is surrounded by the largest walnut forest in the world, and I visited it with my university group last autumn on a three-day trip.
The village is in a green valley at the foot of the mountains, and it has one main road, a few small shops and a waterfall nearby. Most houses are made of wood or stone, and almost every family has a garden with fruit trees and a few animals. We stayed with a local family, who taught us how to collect walnuts and prepare bread in a clay oven. In the afternoons, we hiked to the waterfall, and in the evenings, the neighbours came to visit and share tea. I was the only one in our group who could speak some Kyrgyz, which meant I spent a lot of time translating.
It was very different from my own city. For one thing, the pace of life is much slower there. People wake up early, work outdoors and finish their day when it gets dark. There is little traffic and almost no noise, apart from the roosters and the river. Everyone knows everyone, so neighbours help one another constantly, which I rarely see in the big city where I live. On the other hand, facilities are limited, and young people have fewer job opportunities, which explains why many move away. I really admired the family I stayed with, but I am not sure I could live there permanently, because I would miss shops, libraries and internet access.
Nelere dikkat etmeli
