A practical skill I could teach someone is how to repair a bicycle, especially fixing a puncture and adjusting the brakes. I learned it from my older brother when I was about thirteen, and over the years I've repaired countless bikes for friends and neighbours.

I picked it up mainly by trial and error. My brother showed me the basics once, and then he let me work on my own bike, which meant I made lots of mistakes. I once put the wheel on backwards and couldn't understand why the brakes didn't work. But gradually I got the hang of it, and later I watched videos online to learn more complicated tasks like changing gears.

If I were teaching somebody, I would begin by gathering the right tools, which are just a few spanners, a pump and a repair kit. Then I would break the process down into simple steps: removing the wheel, finding the hole in the inner tube, patching it and putting everything back. I would let the person do each step themselves, because you only really learn by doing, and I'd stay close enough to help when they got stuck. Probably the whole lesson would take about an hour.

I believe it's a very worthwhile skill. It saves money, since a repair shop can charge a lot for a simple job, and it makes you more self-sufficient, so you're never stranded on the road. It's also quite satisfying to fix something with your own hands, and it encourages people to cycle more, which is good for both health and the environment.
