The table compares the number of international visitors, the income from tourism and the average length of stay in five countries in 2019.
Overall, France received the most visitors, but the USA earned by far the highest income and recorded the longest average stay. Turkey earned the least from tourism.
France attracted 89 million visitors, slightly more than Spain with 84 million and the USA with 79 million. The two European countries also had the shortest stays, at 7 and 8 days respectively. France earned $66 billion, while Spain, with fewer visitors, took in more, at $80 billion.
The USA stood out for its revenue. Its income of $214 billion was more than two and a half times that of Spain, the next highest, even though it received fewer tourists. Visitors to the USA also stayed for 12 days on average, the longest period on the table.
Turkey and Thailand were the smallest destinations by visitor numbers, at 51 million and 40 million. Turkey earned just $34 billion, the lowest income despite attracting more visitors than Thailand, which earned $60 billion. Thailand's visitors stayed 11 days on average, compared with 9 days in Turkey.
