From 21 January 2026, TOEFL iBT reports each section and the total on a 1–6 scale in half-band steps. The total is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band.
Until January 2028, score reports also show a comparable 0–120 total, so institutions that still set requirements on the old scale can read new reports. Scores from before 2026 stay valid for two years.
In its IELTS table, ETS rounds the TOEFL total up so that a score is never overstated. That is why IELTS 8.0, 8.5 and 9.0 all match TOEFL 6, and why no IELTS band lands on a TOEFL total of 3.0.

Universities, employers and visa offices set their own minimum for each test. When one names a TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo score, that score is the one you need.

What is 7.5 IELTS in TOEFL?
IELTS 7.5 equals TOEFL iBT 5.5 on the new 1–6 scale and 100–107 on the old 0–120 scale.
What is 110 TOEFL in IELTS?
A TOEFL iBT total of 110 equals IELTS 8.0: that band covers 108–114. On the new 1–6 scale, a total of 110 falls in band 5.5.
What is TOEFL 5 in IELTS?
TOEFL 5.0 on the new scale equals IELTS 7.0, reading ETS's comparison table from the TOEFL side. On the old scale, band 5.0 covers totals of 95–106.
Is 4.5 a good TOEFL score?
On the new scale, 4.5 is a solid B2 result. It matches IELTS 6.5, the band many universities ask for.
What TOEFL score equals IELTS 6.5?

Does the old TOEFL to IELTS table still apply?
No. In April 2025 ETS and the IELTS partners replaced the 2010 table with a joint study of 937 people who took both tests. Sites still showing the 2010 table give slightly different numbers. For tests taken from 21 January 2026, use the 1–6 column.
Which is harder, IELTS or TOEFL?
Neither is harder overall: the tables exist because the same ability earns comparable scores on both. The formats differ. TOEFL iBT is taken on a computer and its Speaking answers are recorded. IELTS Speaking is a live conversation with an examiner. Choose the test your institution accepts and whose format suits you.
