Why the two PTE tables disagree
Pearson's table (July 2025) comes from 1,522 people who took both tests within 90 days in 2024, on the current PTE Academic. It gives a PTE range for every IELTS band from 4.5 to 9.0.
The IELTS partners' table comes from their own 2021 study and is printed on ielts.org. It gives one PTE figure for each band from 5.0 to 8.5. Read as a minimum, it asks for a few more PTE points at most bands: 66.3 for IELTS 7.0, where Pearson asks for 63.
The two tables often put the same PTE score half a band apart: PTE 63 is 7.0 in Pearson's and 6.5 in the IELTS partners'. They come from different studies, years apart, on different versions of PTE.

Universities, employers and visa offices set their own minimum for each test. When one names a TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo score, that score is the one you need.

Is 63 PTE 7 or 6.5 in IELTS?
By Pearson's July 2025 table, PTE 63 is IELTS 7.0: the band covers 63–70. By the IELTS partners' table, band 7.0 starts at 66.3, so 63 reads as 6.5.
If your institution names a PTE minimum, use that. If it only names an IELTS band, ask which table it follows.
What is IELTS 7 equal to in PTE?
PTE 63–70 by Pearson's table. The IELTS partners' table links band 7.0 to PTE 66.3.
What is 5.5 IELTS in PTE?
PTE 39–46 by Pearson's table, or 45.4 by the IELTS partners' table.
What is PTE 79 in IELTS?
IELTS 8.0 by Pearson's table. By the IELTS partners' table, 79 reads as 7.5, because their figure for 8.0 is 82.3.
What PTE score do I need for IELTS 6.5?
PTE 55 or more by Pearson's table, where 55–62 is band 6.5. The IELTS partners' figure for 6.5 is 58.5.
Which PTE table should I use?
Pearson's July 2025 table is newer and covers the current PTE Academic, so our converter shows it first. If an institution states its own PTE minimum, use that. We show the IELTS partners' figure beside Pearson's wherever they differ.
