Some people think that social media companies should be legally responsible for protecting their users' personal information. I agree with this view, although users also have a part to play.

Companies should bear legal responsibility because they collect and control vast amounts of data, including names, locations, photographs, messages and browsing habits. Users usually have no real way of checking how this information is stored or who can reach it, and the terms and conditions they accept are long and difficult to understand. When a company fails to secure data, millions of people can suffer identity theft, fraud or harassment, as happened when hundreds of millions of accounts were exposed in a series of well-known breaches. Since these firms profit enormously from the data, it is fair that they accept the duty to protect it. Legal liability, including heavy fines, would give them a real financial reason to invest in security, while rules such as the European Union's data protection regulation show that stricter laws can improve practice.

However, the law cannot protect everyone entirely, and users should take reasonable care. They can choose strong passwords, adjust privacy settings and avoid posting sensitive details such as home addresses or holiday plans. Excessive regulation could also be a problem: if rules are too strict or vague, small start-ups may be unable to meet them, which would reduce competition and innovation, and different national laws can be hard to enforce on global platforms.

A balanced system would therefore set clear, proportionate standards for companies while educating the public about online safety.

In conclusion, social media companies hold sensitive information for profit and should be legally accountable for its protection, but individual vigilance and well-designed regulation are also necessary.
