Rising incomes and cheaper transport mean that more people from developing countries can now holiday abroad. I consider this a positive development overall, with a few drawbacks that need to be managed.

The main benefit is cultural learning. Travellers who visit other countries see different ways of living, taste unfamiliar food and meet people from other backgrounds, and this experience can reduce stereotypes and build understanding between nations. It is also beneficial for the travel industry. Airlines, hotels and local tour operators gain new customers, and this growth supports jobs in many places. For the travellers themselves, a holiday abroad is a source of pride and a chance to broaden their horizons, something that was once available only to the wealthy citizens of rich countries. This is a fairer situation globally.

There are, however, negative consequences. A sudden increase in visitors puts pressure on popular sites, which become crowded and in some cases damaged. The environmental impact of flights is considerable, and a rising number of travellers means more emissions. Cultural clashes can occur if tourists are unfamiliar with local norms, and residents may feel that their communities are overwhelmed.

Nevertheless, these problems are better dealt with by regulation than by denying people the opportunity to travel. Authorities can manage visitor numbers at fragile sites, tax flights to reflect their environmental cost and provide guidance for new tourists on respectful behaviour. It would be unfair for wealthier nations, which have enjoyed international travel for decades, to complain when others now join in.

In conclusion, wider access to foreign travel promotes understanding, supports the industry and increases fairness, and although it brings crowding and pollution, careful management can limit these effects.
